Artistamp for today speaks for itself.

Mailart for today (27th) depicts a rather poignant representation of a tale from The Holocaust.
I was looking at how I could mark Holocaust Memorial Day (not the easiest of themes) in mailart, when I read on a blog about the Holocaust Memorial in Boston, USA which is made up of 6 square glass towers. There are apparently personal inscriptions on each panel and the one I read about and which inspired this reads as follows:
ILSE, A CHILDHOOD FRIEND of mine,
once found a raspberry in the camp
and carried it in her pocket all day
to present to me that night on a leaf
IMAGINE A WORLD in which
your entire possession is
one raspberry and
you gave it to your friend.

Artistamp for Wednesday(25th) features Scotland's national poet Mr Rabbie Burns.

Mailart for Wednesday 25th January 2012 is dedicated "Tae a Moose", a poem I can remember reciting many a time while at primary school and for those not familiar with the whole thing, here it is below.

Wee, sleekit, cowrin, tim’rous beastie,
O, what a panic’s in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty,
Wi’ bickering brattle!
I wad be laith to rin an’ chase thee
Wi’ murd’ring pattle!
I’m truly sorry man’s dominion,
Has broken nature’s social union,
An’ justifies that ill opinion,
What makes thee startle
At me, thy poor, earth-born companion,
An’ fellow-mortal!
I doubt na, whiles, but thou may thieve;
What then? poor beastie, thou maun live!
A daimen icker in a thrave
’S a sma’ request;
I’ll get a blessin wi’ the lave,
An’ never miss’t!
Thy wee bit housie, too, in ruin!
It’s silly wa’s the win’s are strewin!
An’ naething, now, to big a new ane,
O’ foggage green!
An’ bleak December’s winds ensuin,
Baith snell an’ keen!
Thou saw the fields laid bare an’ waste,
An’ weary winter comin fast,
An’ cozie here, beneath the blast,
Thou thought to dwell -
Till crash! the cruel coulter past
Out thro’ thy cell.
That wee bit heap o’ leaves an’ stibble,
Has cost thee mony a weary nibble!
Now thou’s turn’d out, for a’ thy trouble,
But house or hald,
To thole the winter’s sleety dribble,
An’ cranreuch cauld!
But Mousie, thou art no thy lane,
In proving foresight may be vain;
The best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men
Gang aft agley,
An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain,
For promis’d joy!
Still thou art blest, compar’d wi’ me;
The present only toucheth thee:
But och! I backward cast my e’e,
On prospects dreaer!
An’ forward, tho’ I canna see,
I guess an’ fear!
Rabbie Burns

In case you didn't know, and I didn't until I was doing this, apart from being Friday the 13th (cue scarey music!) today is Rubber Duck Day and like the chocolate swirls in today's mailart, the rubber ducks on today's artistamp don't seem at all bothered by it, so let's just keep it quiet!

Artistamp for today should actually have been Step in a Puddle And Splash Your Friends Day but I got it a little bit wrong and did it a day early (see 10th below). So today's artistamp sidesteps the puddles and marks the death on this day of the English novelist and poet, Thomas Hardy in 1928.

and the second item arrived just before Christmas and I then got caught up in all the celebrations so wasn't able to feature it here until now, it's a papier mache heart covered in some recent GB Christmas stamps, sent in byJulia Elmore who also recently contributed to Positively Postal's ongoing A-Z of the U.K. mailart project. So many thanks to both Iris and Julia and that really does draw a line under Christmas 2011!

Artistamp for today(7th) marks The Festival of Seven Herbs, or Nanakusa no sekku (七草の節句) which is the long-standing Japanese custom of eating seven-herb rice porridge (nanakusa-gayu) on January 7 (Jinjitsu).
If anybody in Japan or elsewhere has any other information or a postcard/stamp relating to this festival then please do send it in and I will feature it on the Positively Postal website or on the blog.

The nanakusa are seven edible wild herbs of spring. Traditionally, they are :
- Water dropwort (芹 : せり seri)
- Shepherd's Purse (薺 : なずな nazuna)
There is considerable variation in the precise ingredients, with common local herbs often being substituted.
On the morning of January 7, or the night before, people place the nanakusa, rice scoop, and/or wooden pestle on the cutting board and, facing the good-luck direction, chant "Before the birds of the continent (China) fly to Japan, let's get nanakusa" while cutting the herbs into pieces. The chant may vary.
The seventh of the first month has been an important Japanese festival since ancient times. The custom of eating nanakusa-gayu on this day, to bring longevity and health, developed in Japan from a similar ancient Chinese custom, intended to ward off evil. Since there is little green at that time of the year, the young green herbs bring color to the table and eating them suits the spirit of the New Year.
The spring-time nanakusa are mirrored by the "seven flowers of autumn", which are bush clover (hagi), miscanthus (obana, Miscanthus sinensis), kudzu, large pink (nadeshiko, Dianthus superbus), yellow flowered valerian (ominaeshi, Patrinia scabiosaefolia), boneset (fujibakama, Eupatorium fortunei), and Chinese bellflower (kikyō). These seven autumn flowers provide visual enjoyment. Their simplicity was very much admired: they are small and dainty yet beautifully colored. They are named as typical autumn flowers in a verse from the Man'yōshū anthology.
Cautionary note
The Japanese parsley (Oenanthe javanica) is one of the few non-toxic species of the Oenanthe (water dropworts) genus, which are otherwise extremely toxic. As this species is not found outside of Asia unless specifically cultivated, one should always consider wild-growing varieties of water dropworts to be lethal, even in small amounts.
