30 Mammal Facts contd.

Water voles live in the banks of slow moving rivers, streams and other waterways.

In the wild water voles survive for only two years on average.

Water voles are often mistaken for brown rats which puts them at danger of being poisoned by pest controllers.

 

 

 

The Greater Horseshoe Bat is the largest of the European Horseshoe Bats.

Horseshoe Bats have a horseshoe-shaped (hence the name) structure called a nose-leaf. This amplifies the ultrasonic calls which the bat emits.

It is now a rare species in Britain only being found in the South-West of England and South Wales.

 

Otters mainly eat fish and shellfish but sometime also birds and small mammals.

An otter's den is called a holt or couch.

Otters are fast and agile swimmers.

 

 

 

 

Dormice spend a long time in hibernation, sometimes up to six months.

They feed on fruits, berries, flowers, nuts and insects.

 Dormice breed once a year with a litter of four young on average.

 

 

 

 

Hedgehogs are Britain's only spiny mammal and may have up to 6,000 spines on their body.

They eat slugs and earthworms.

Their eyesight is poor but they make up for that with their sense of smell and hearing, both of which are very good.
