30 Mammal Facts

There are at least 80,000 humpback whales worldwide.
Adult whales can range in length from 12-16 metres and weigh approximately 36,000 kg.
They mainly feed off a diet of krill and small fish.
The wildcat hunts small mammals and birds.
Female wildcats produce one family a year in spring.
Unlike its domesticated cousin the wildcat is not keen on humans and keeps its distance, living on its own.
Brown long-eared bats are the second commonest species of bat in Britain.
They have large ears, hence the name, which are three quarters the length of their head and body.
Long-eared bats come out at night feeding on moths,caterpillars and spiders.
The polecat is a member of the Mustelidae family and is related to stoats, otters and minks.
They are solitary and nocturnal animals with each single polecat having a different musky scent.
They feed on small animals and eggs and so are not welcome by farmers.
The sperm whale is a toothed whale with the largest brain of any mammal.
It gets its name from the waxy substance called spermaceti found in the animal's head and resembling semen.
A bull can grow up to 20.5 metres long making it the largest living toothed animal.
